Do You Suffer From Sardine-o-phobia?

Sardines get a bad rap. Many people, if asked, will say they don’t like sardines, when in fact they’ve never even tried one. Chicken of the Sea is on a mission to change Americans’ perception of sardines by challenging consumers to overcome their sardine-o-phobia by trying the tasty (and super healthy) new Brisling Sardines, available in three gourmet flavors: pure spring water, olive oil and Mediterranean style.

“Sardines are a nutrition a powerhouse, filled with important nutrients found to promote cardiovascular health, bone health and reduce the risk of cancer and other diseases,” said Sharon McNerney, a registered dietitian. “Incorporating sardines into your regular diet is not only healthy, but opens you up to many new meal and snack options.”

Here are some of the health benefits of sardines:

Heart Health
Sardines are a natural source of omega-3 fatty acids, which have been found to lower triglycerides and cholesterol levels. Sardines are also an excellent source of vitamin B12, which promotes cardiovascular health by keeping levels of homocysteine in balance, which otherwise can cause damage to artery walls.

Bone Health
Sardines are rich in calcium and vitamin D, which combined play an essential part in bone health since vitamin D increases the absorption of calcium. Sardines are also a good source of phosphorus, a mineral that is important to strengthening bones.

Disease Prevention
Omega-3 fatty acids have been found to protect against many types of cancer. Sardines are rich in omega-3s, and according to book “The Sardine Diet,” these acids may block a gene involved in the formation of cancer tumors.

Improve Skin Appearance
Sardines are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals that have been found to promote youthful and healthy looking skin. The book, “The Sardine Diet,” says the anti-oxidants sardines contain can help to prevent wrinkles, while the omega-3 fatty acids can improve skin tone and color.
