SAN DIEGO – Mar. 8, 2013 – Tri-Union Seafoods LLC, which previously announced a voluntary recall, is now expanding it to include a limited amount of Chicken of the Sea brand 5-ounce chunk light tuna in oil. This is in addition to the limited amount of Chicken of the Sea brand 5-ounce chunk white albacore tuna in water announced March 6, 2013.

The UPC code (also known as the bar code) is found on the label of the product. The Best By date is printed on the bottom of the can. The product lot codes that are part of this voluntary recall can also be found on the bottom of the can.

Iconic Seafood Brand to Extend into New Food and Non-Food Products

NEW YORK – Dec. 11, 2012 – Perpetual Licensing LLC, a New York and Los Angeles-based brand licensing agency, announced it has been engaged by Chicken of the Sea International to develop its strategic brand licensing program.

Perpetual will work with Chicken of the Sea to extend the brand into new healthy, nutritious and convenient seafood and seafood-related products that reinforce the brand’s position as a leader in the market. Licensed products could include soups (such as clam/seafood chowders), seafood stocks, meal starter kits, sandwich spreads, condiments and other products that complement seafood.

Famous for its iconic mermaid and unforgettable jingle, and with nearly 100 percent brand awareness and distribution to more than 50,000 retail locations, Chicken of the Sea controls a large share of the grocery market for packaged seafood. Chicken of the Sea offers consumers a wide array of seafood products beyond its popular tuna including: salmon, clams, crabs, mackerel, oysters, shrimp, kipper snacks and sardines. The company sells more than 250 million cans and pouches of seafood annually, making it the No. 1 brand in many of its segments.

“Our products are a kitchen staple and consumed by millions of consumers every day,” said John Sawyer, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Chicken of the Sea. “As we near our 100th anniversary, we believe the Chicken of the Sea brand can extend into many new product categories. After an extensive agency review, we chose Perpetual Licensing because its team and its vision for the licensing program, were most aligned with our own plans for future growth.”

Chicken of the Sea has a long history of innovation, dating back to the early part of the 20th century, when it was the first cannery to commercially pack yellowfin tuna. Chicken of the Sea would later become the first national brand to introduce skinless/boneless pink salmon and specialty seafood products, including crab, shrimp, oysters and clams. Peel-and-eat cups, introduced in 2006, add to the list of innovations brought to consumers by the brand. Earlier this year, Chicken of the Sea introduced No Drain Tuna, a revolutionary tuna product that comes in an easy-to-open can and doesn’t require liquid to be drained prior to using it.

“Food-related brand licensing has become more prevalent as consumers seek brands they know and trust in the grocery aisle,” adds Todd Lustgarten, a partner at Perpetual Licensing. “The Perpetual team is excited to work with dedicated and innovative partners such as Chicken of the Sea to help build strategic licensing programs. In addition to food products, we also believe there is opportunity for non-food “badge” products that feature the iconic Chicken of the Sea Mermaid.”

SAN DIEGO – Sept. 17, 2012 - Four sensational women in their 60s are grand-prize winners and will receive a dream birthday celebration thanks to Chicken of the Sea’s 60s & Sensational Contest, which recognizes people in their 60s who fuel their mind, body and spirit with healthy eating, physical activity and personal fulfillment.

The contest is a celebration of the Chicken of the Sea Mermaid who is celebrating her 60th birthday. Thousands of votes were cast on Facebook through two voting phases for nominations that included photos and short essays. Four grand-prize winners chose between three sensational birthday packages: a 60s & Sensational $1,000 shopping spree; dinner with three friends, including a limo for transportation; or a spa package for two, complete with hotel accommodations and dinner.

The first grand-prize winner, Terry Ausband, was nominated by her daughter Julee. Terry, who lives in North Carolina, is a sensational 64-year-old who enjoys playing and reading with her grandchildren, being a chef at a local restaurant and getting together with friends at least once a week. When she’s not cooking up delicious meals for her customers or spending time with her grandkids, Terry enjoys tending to her garden.

Kimberly from Massachusetts nominated second grand-prize winner, Denise Sullivan, a close family friend. One of Denise’s passions includes helping others overcome drug and alcohol addiction. She was so committed to making a difference in other people’s lives that she decided, at the age of 60, to go to college for the first time to become an alcohol and drug counselor – her most recent work was with female inmates struggling with drug addiction. Denise teaches her clients to lead a healthy lifestyle through proper eating habits, the power of meditation and self-awareness.

The third grand-prize winner is Wisconsin resident, Mary Serowski. Her daughter, Jenny, is so proud of her mother’s newly found dedication to a healthier lifestyle, she jumped at the opportunity to nominate her. Mary works hard to live a healthy lifestyle by improving her diet and increasing the amount of exercise she gets. Mary also began taking weekly bike rides to boost her energy and keep up with her three grandchildren who often accompany her, making these rides a fun activity for her whole family.

The final grand-prize winner is Joan Deman from Michigan. Joan’s best friend’s daughter, Jill, sees her as a second mother and second grandmother to her own daughter. Jill describes Joan as “the perfect role model for any woman who is trying to balance a career, family, religion and everyday life.” Joan takes care of her 91-year-old mother, maintains a demanding job, attends and participates in her church weekly, and never forgets the birthdays or special occasions of her loved ones.

Company Releases its 2011 Sustainability Report, Sets Goals for 2012

SAN DIEGO – August 21, 2012 - Exemplifying its commitment to operating a socially and environmentally responsible business, Chicken of the Sea International has released its first corporate sustainability report, the culmination of a company-wide sustainability assessment undertaken in 2011.

The third-party assessment, led by Strategic Sustainability Consulting, was a yearlong project that examined practices throughout the organization and its supply chain, and focused on creating a systematic approach to managing and developing the company’s sustainability initiatives – including goals for the future.

“Our sustainability efforts do not end when seafood is caught, but extend all the way through processing, packaging and delivery to our customers,” said John Sawyer, Chicken of the Sea’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. “Where we have direct control over our operations, we are taking direct steps to optimize and reduce our possible impact and footprint. Where we do not have direct control, such as our supply chain, we have established clear expectations and are building a concrete review process.”

As part of the auditing process, Chicken of the Sea identified four key areas for improvement:

  • Data collection systems for carbon, waste and water throughout its facilities – The company underwent a comprehensive carbon footprint assessment to gather information on its own operations, as well as information from its suppliers. As a result of this assessment, Chicken of the Sea realized it is responsible for 75,600 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, with freight transportation responsible for 78 percent of its total emissions. The company is committed to vigorously working with its freight vendors to improve these emissions and support each vendor’s own sustainability initiatives.
  • Supporting the product life cycle for all of its products, from responsible fishing practices to using recycled-content packaging materials – In 2011, Chicken of the Sea focused on collecting robust data to create a baseline to measure future progress. In 2012, the company is using this information to identify opportunities to reduce its environmental impact and implement new management systems.
  • Supply chain management – Chicken of the Sea underwent a thorough review of its supply chain, which led to a new Supplier Code of Conduct. Chicken of the Sea is continuing to develop a more formalized auditing plan for its supply chain, which will be introduced within the next two years.
  • Sustainability expectations for Chicken of the Sea employees – The company is working to more closely integrate sustainability expectations into its employee engagement activities. These projects will be completed in 2012 and reported upon in next year’s report.
