Chicken of the Sea takes pride in our long-standing commitment to operating a socially and environmentally responsible business. Our sustainability efforts begin when the seafood is caught and extend all the way through processing, packaging and delivery to our consumers.

We recently released our first corporate sustainability report, which is a result of a yearlong third-party assessment that examined practices throughout our entire organization and supply chain.

As part of this process, we identified four key areas for improvement:

  • Data collection systems for carbon, waste and water throughout our facilities – We realized we are responsible for 75,600 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, with freight transportation accounting for 78 percent of our total emissions. We are committed to vigorously working with our freight vendors to improve these emissions and support our vendor’s own sustainability initiatives.
  • Supporting the product life cycle for all of our products, from responsible fishing practices to using recycled-content packaging materials – In 2011, we focused on collecting robust data to create a baseline to measure future progress. In 2012, we are using this information to identify opportunities to reduce our environmental impact and implement new management systems.
  • Supply chain management – We underwent a thorough review of our supply chain, which led to a new Supplier Code of Conduct. We are continuing to develop a more formalized auditing plan for our supply chain, which will be introduced within the next two years.
  • Sustainability expectations for Chicken of the Sea employees – We are working to more closely integrate sustainability expectations into our employee engagement activities.

Our sustainability assessment is the first step in what will be an ongoing and long-term effort to better communicate with our consumers on issues of social and environmental responsibility. We look forward to openly sharing our sustainability challenges and opportunities in the coming years.

As most parents know, children can say the funniest things and ask the funniest questions. Now, one funny gem has won a Florida woman and her family a vacation to Walt Disney World, thanks to Chicken of the Sea.

The Chicken of the Sea Funniest Kids’ Quotes Contest™ garnered thousands of entrants who submitted a short essay showcasing their child’s funny comment or question on Chicken of the Sea’s Facebook page. The winners were chosen by popular public vote.

Grand-prize winner, Veronica Semino of Pembroke Pines, Fla., brought a new perspective to nursing with her entry, “Baby Eating Boobies.” When Semino’s 3-year-old daughter saw her newborn brother nursing for the first time, she yelled, “Oh no Mami, the baby is eating your boobies!”

As the grand-prize winner, Semino will receive a four-day, three-night family vacation to Walt Disney World.

“A few months ago, we launched the Chicken of the Sea Funniest Kids’ Quotes Contest™ to give our fans a new way to engage with the brand and have some fun in the process,” said John Sawyer, Chicken of the Sea’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. “We wanted parents to be able to share the same stories about their kids that they share with their friends on a regular basis, except in a more public and engaging way.”

Following in Semino’s footsteps, the first runner-up is Wendy Hughes of Cincinnati for her entry, “Tired & Confused,” which earned her a cash prize of $1,000. One night, after listening to her 4-year-old son say over and over “I don’t wanna go to bed,” Hughes asked him one last time if he was ready for bed and he responded by saying, “but I don’t like peaches.” It turned out her little boy was more tired than he realized.

The second runner-up and winner of $500 goes to Jenny Hernandez of Rincon, Ga., for her entry “Hey Nana!” In her entry, Hernandez described her daughter watching her grandma apply makeup and asked, “How come I don’t have stripes on my forehead?” She was referring to her grandma’s wrinkles.

The contest builds off of the brand’s latest campaign that brings its iconic Mermaid to life. In a recent video, the Mermaid tries to explain to a little boy why Chicken of the Sea is the best tuna with the boy asking “why?” over and over again, as children are known to do quite often.

Little Luxuries to Treat Yourself

Sometimes you need time to relax and take a break from the daily pressures of life. Seventy-five percent of Americans experience some level of stress every two weeks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Taking just a few simple “time outs” or small indulgences can make you feel rejuvenated, refreshed and better prepared to tackle life’s challenges, and these refreshers don’t have to break the bank.

Here are some affordable ways to unwind and treat yourself:

  • Most of us enjoy flowers, but never think to buy them for ourselves. Why not treat yourself to some fresh cut flowers at your local farmers market, where you can often purchase a couple stems of flowers instead of needing to buy a whole bouquet. Or, better yet, just walk outside to your garden and clip a stem or two of your favorite flowers and bring them inside to enjoy.
  • Clip on your iPod and go for a walk, even if it’s only for 20 minutes. The fresh air and tunes will help you relax.
  • Treat yourself to a pedicure. With many salons offering reasonable prices, it’s well worth letting someone else pamper your toes. Or, at home, soak your tired feet in Epsom salts or add a couple drops of your favorite essential oil to hot water.
  • Take a relaxing bath by filling the tub with hot water and adding your favorite bath salts or oils.
  • Whether you go it alone or bring a friend, it’s always pleasant to treat yourself to a latte or cappuccino, which can feel like a treat for only a few dollars.
  • Curl up on the couch and read a favorite book.
  • Prepare dinner and eat by candlelight. Candlelight can turn even the simplest meal into a luxurious treat.

Chicken of the Sea’s newest offering; Premium Select Tuna, is the perfect ingredient to whip up a gourmet meal quickly. It is rich in flavor and texture, and will make you feel like you are treating yourself to a luxury meal at an affordable price.
