Bay Area Woman Hooks a Fiji Vacation as Winner of World Tuna Day Recipe Challenge
Amy Meiers comes out on top of Chicken of the Sea “Best of the Sea” Challenge for her California-Style Tuna Melt
SANTA ROSA, Calif. (May 23, 2017) – Chicken of the Sea has honored a Santa Rosa, Calif., woman with a trip to Fiji for creating a reimagined version of a classic tuna dish for World Tuna Day.
Amy Meiers was proclaimed the winner of the seafood provider’s Best of the Sea Recipe Challenge, a first-of-its-kind recipe contest to create the Official Mermaid World Tuna Day Menu in honor of the May 2 holiday. Meiers’ California Style Tuna Melt was selected from more than 600 recipes and 8,600 public votes to receive the Grand Prize of a trip for two to Fiji, a $100 Visa gift card and featured positioning in the Official Mermaid World Tuna Day Menu.
Fiji is one of several dozen countries that supply the bulk of the world’s canned tuna supply and work through such organizations as the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission and Parties to the Nauru Agreement to ensure the sustainability of the tuna-fishing industry across the Pacific.
“I’m excited to be able to visit Fiji, where tuna isn’t just a recipe ingredient – it’s a way of life,” Meiers said. “My husband and I were planning a trip to celebrate our 11th anniversary in September, so the timing is perfect. Who knew that a simple recipe I originally made at work as a quick-and-healthy-lunch option would be my ticket to one of the most beautiful destinations in the world!”
Meiers’ winning recipe includes Chicken of the Sea tuna, a Greek yogurt/mayonnaise sauce and dill seasoning on sourdough bread and topped with California avocados and melted cheddar cheese.
She said a love for developing recipes introduced her to the world of competitive cooking. She and her son, Cannon, have entered and won other recipe contests, including former First Lady Michelle Obama’s Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, which crowned her champion for California.
“I think it is valuable for kids to know what’s going into their food and how to cook healthy and delicious meals,” Meiers added. “Cannon has a very rare genetic disorder, so our family is all about eating healthy.”
Amy was announced as the Grand Prize winner through a Facebook Livestream on World Tuna Day that was hosted by Julie Clark, blogger of Tastes of Lizzy T, and garnered more than 14,000 views.
The top 25 “Best of the Sea” recipes, as determined by a panel of seafood and recipe judges, were then voted on by the public to create eight finalist recipes to be featured in Chicken of the Sea’s Official Mermaid World Tuna Day Menu.
