Chicken of the Sea® Celebrates World Tuna Day
Shelf-stable seafood leader donates to FisheryProgress.org to help it monitor global fishery improvement projects worldwide. Launch of Official Chicken of the Sea Mermaid World Tuna Day Menu and Facebook Live event add to the May 2 festivities
SAN DIEGO (May 2, 2017) – In honor of America’s beloved tuna sandwich, melt and noodle casserole, Chicken of the Sea celebrates today’s World Tuna Day with an official holiday menu, a Facebook Live event and a tribute to tuna’s contribution to communities and livelihoods around the world.
World Tuna Day on May 2 is a global celebration created by the Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) in 2011 to honor international tuna fishing communities and conservation. Consisting of Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu, PNA is among the world’s largest sustainable tuna fisheries.
Key to the San Diego seafood provider’s support for this year’s World Tuna Day was the Best of the Sea Recipe Challenge, a three-phase tuna recipe contest ending today. The top eight tuna recipes from the more than 600 submitted by contest participants have been bundled into the Chicken of the Sea Official Mermaid World Tuna Day Menu and are being made available today for the first time on the Chicken of the Sea website.
As part of the program and its ongoing efforts to protect tuna for future generations, Chicken of the Sea contributed $5,000 to FisheryProgress.org, a one-stop shop that provides information on the progress of global fishery improvement projects worldwide. FisheryProgress.org is a project of the Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions, and is managed by FishChoice.
“Chicken of the Sea’s support sends the message to the industry and beyond that FisheryProgress.org is having a positive impact monitoring global fishery improvement projects (FIPs) worldwide,” said Richard Boot, president of FishChoice. “This donation helps us continue to improve the functionality and usability of our site – and deliver on our goal to give buyers the consistent, verified information they need to determine whether specific FIPs are true to their objectives.”
Today from 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. ET, tuna lovers and foodies nationwide are encouraged to tune into Chicken of the Sea’s Facebook Live, hosted by beloved food blogger Julie Clark of Tastes from Lizzy T, to showcase new twists on classic tuna recipes.
Creators of the eight Best of the Sea finalist recipes will be entered in a random drawing to receive the Best of the Sea Grand Prize of a trip for two to Fiji. The menu and the grand prize winner will be announced during the Facebook Live event.
