A Sea Change for Seafood

Our Fishery
Our fishery in Sri Lanka’s Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar is now a Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Good Alternative, after years of working to implement improvements in fishing practices through the Blue Swimming Crab Fishery Improvement Project (FIP).

Chicken of the Sea’s sister company and crabmeat supplier in Sri Lanka, Taprobane Seafood Group, has worked very closely in the implementation of the country’s FIP as well as providing more than 1,500 jobs in the region, mostly for women. In addition, Taprobane became the first privately-owned company in Sri Lanka to employ persons with disabilities.

In a close partnership, Chicken of the Sea and Taprobane Seafood Group offers 100% digital traceability of all its products.

Seafood Watch  Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program evaluates the ecological sustainability of wild-caught and farmed seafood sold in the United States. The organization defines sustainable seafood as originating from sources, whether wild-caught or farmed, which can maintain or increase production in the long-term without jeopardizing the structure or function of affected ecosystems.

Using rigorous criteria, like minimizing by catch and ensuring no impact on endangered or protected species, the organization ranks products into three categories: “Best Choices,” “Good Alternatives” or “Avoid.” You can read the full Seafood Watch report for more information.
